Where's Coach When you need Him?
This is about school Locker Rooms, and a question to you guys?
I was reading in the paper, this morning an article about sexual hazing of team-mates in School locker rooms. Statement is made - schools don't have coaches keeping watch in the locker rooms. An Athletic School official says this (exact words) "You don't want to say you have to have an adult in there with minors who are changing because then you could set off a whole other set of problems."
We've done a lot of talking on here about locker rooms. What do you think about this?

I voted that we did have a coach in there, but it was random. I once heard about 2 boys got in a fight in the showers. I knew both of em and they were not troublemakers. In this case I think the coach might have prevented it but who knows. I wasn't in that gym class. Wished I had seen that fight though, lol.

ReplyDeleteNowadays, when mere accusations can destroy careers, a young boy just saying, "Coach was always in there when I was naked and he was always looking at my junk. I could tell he was staring. And he'd privately say things to me that made me really uncomfortable. He invited me to his apartment one time and I said no." (Enough to fire a coach?)

DeleteIf a person thinks this over, there are a lot of obstacles to overcome. Just to name one, the layout of the room. My junior high locker room was one large rectangle with the coach's office fitted into a corner and lockers along the walls. Two windows in the office gave him a complete view of the whole area - lockers, showers, basket cage and towel/equipment closet.
ReplyDeleteBut when I went out for HS track, the high school locker room was completely different. Clusters of lockers were set in islands all over the room. It was impossible for a coach to tell what was going on from the office. He would have to constantly walk back and forth through every narrow lane between the lockers. Not likely to happen.
today is so much different than when i was in school. i know of kids today they do not have to shower or change in front of anyone if they don't want anyone to see them naked. they have a special room were they can change in private, they also do not have to take a shower if they don't want to. when i was in school we never gave it a thought about getting undress and standing there naked in front of everyone even if we had a boner it never mattered to us if any was watching us or not. in the shower we all took our shower at the same time and never minded at all being naked in front of everyone. the teacher was always watching to make sure we all took our shower and then got dressed and not be fooling around. we did fool around in the shower with out getting caught. it never bother us at all that teacher was watching us.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in jr. high (it was a long time ago) the gym teacher would be physically in the locker room making sure we all showered. In high school, the coach's office was in the corner and it had 2 windows looking out in 2 directions into the locker room, but they had slat-blinds on them that were almost always closed. But I suppose at any moment, if any commotion started in the locker room, the coach could open the blinds and see everything that was going on.
ReplyDeleteThe Polish school system since I remember is run the way, that each class has separate lessons, Polish, English, Math, Geography etc. and never join other class at the same level for common lesson. This apply to PE too. It mean that during PE we were 10-15 boys from the same class only. At primary school (1-8 grade) we had never showers, excluding swimming lessons at grade 5. There were not (and there are not till now) swimming pools at schools, we had to go to other part of city to swimming center (one or two in city) accompanied by PE coach and one or two parents. There we had to take shower before and after pool. We had no problem to be nude in front of each other, and didn’t care when coach or father entered locker room or shower. We screamed loudly out when mother entered the shower, but even then we didn’t cover. Sometimes, “by accident” mother was splashed with water” J .
ReplyDeleteAt high school (college) grade 9-12, we had showers and used it willingly, not caring about nudity. I never heard about single case of molestation, never witnessed bullying behavior. Coach, or any other adult never appeared in locker room or shower.
I agree with Farmboy, that in sixties through eighties nudity among boys was absolutely normal and fooling under the shower was fun. Fooling I mean dancing and waving peters. Common wanking occurred rarely, but never reciproca under schools showers.
This days school showers are still unattended by coach or adults, and there are no rumors about bullying.
There were accidents of molestation or even rape between boys, but in orphanage houses or correction centers for boys only, and they are rather rare.
This days everything goes upside down. With pornography within one mouse click, sex, gays forums and so on, and so many false accusations, the presence of any adult at showers would lead to scandals caused by false claims.
Before in shower rooms at public pools, beaches and so on you could always see naked kids, teenboys and adult men together and nobody said a word. Shy boys/men could take a shower in briefs, and that was OK too.
At present in such places it’s difficult to see a single naked boy or man. Adults are afraid to be accused of sexual molestation, boys get ashamed each other. The world goes crazy! I wish the old times return!

i have to agree with you the times today are so different from back when i was a boy. i also wish the old times would return. at least back then kids could be kids and not have to worry about being seen naked by a adult.
