On arriving at the locker room we would peel off our street clothes including underwear. Then we put on our jocks and the PE outfit, so our assets were briefly visible at that moment. After class we went back to the locker room and stripped totally bare. We walked to the showers, stood naked and waited for our turn under the spray and then lathered up naked alongside two dozen other guys.
When we left the showers we were finally handed a towel and at that moment it was each boy's choice as to whether he covered up or let it all hang out. Many boys saved time by drying off while walking to their locker. I remember folding the towel in half after drying off, and laying it on the wet floor so the soles of my feet would get dry. To the best of my memory there was no staring, joking or sexual element.
Yes, everybody saw everybody else, and knew that they themselves were being seen. But it was no big deal, just a normal part of the day.

Exactly: It was n-o-r-m-a-l. Normal then and should be normal now.
ReplyDeleteYes, I can agree. It became normal after just a few weeks back then. But now I think it's almost rare that middle school aged boys ever shower together, or shower at all in MOST schools unless they're on a sports team. I think more boys today are taught that it's a violation of their personal privacy to be placed in any situation where anyone will see them naked. And that's unfortunate.
