I started middle school in the early 2000’s. Our gym was a fairly new building and the locker room did have a few showers but they were little cubicles where you would go in, lock the door and you could shower and get changed in complete privacy.
So I guess like the first commenter mentioned, I can confirm that for us the open-group showering in most schools has had its day sadly.
Also it was a requirement to change clothes before gym class but not to shower. Changing clothes took place in a group setting in the locker room but the most you would get a glimpse of would be a fellow student in his underwear or shirtless while changing clothes. Nobody ever showered and if they did it was locked away.
